About Kamakshi Amman Temple
The temple was built by the Pallava kings in the 6th century A.D. The main deity, Kamakshi Amman, is seated in a padmasana (yogic posture) signifying peace and prosperity, holding sugarcane and a flowered bow. The deity is considered one among the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas — ‘Ka’ meaning Goddess Saraswathi, ‘Ma’ meaning Goddess Lakshmi and ‘Kshi’ meaning eyes, indicating the deity holds the power of knowledge and wealth.
